The working body

For days spent sitting, and days spent moving

Open daily,
11:00–19:00 JST (last start 19:00)

Most of the day in one position.
Or a day that ends in trains,
and meeting rooms.

After days like those, we work on the body by hand. This page gathers our shoulder, neck, eye and lower back pages in one place. Start from the area that troubles you, or from a full-body session that goes through everything first.

Days spent at a screen

On a long day at a screen, the shoulders, the neck and the eyes grow heavy together. The eyes that follow the screen, the neck holding up a head that has drifted forward, the shoulders taking the weight of the arms. All three are connected.

The lower back and the upper back set in turn, in proportion to the hours in the chair. Here, shiatsu is given by hand and thumb. No oil, no instruments.

If you know where it sits, we give that area more of the hour; if you do not, we go through the whole body first and decide from there. The pages for each area are shoulders, head and neck, eye strain and lower back. If you would first like to know what shiatsu is and how it differs from massage, What is shiatsu sets that out.

Days spent moving

The day you get back from a trip, the day you step off a long flight. After a round of golf, or an evening at the theatre, the body sets in different places from a day in a chair. The arm and shoulder that carried the bag, the legs that walked, and a clock that no longer matches the city you are in.

The pages for these are after a long flight and travel fatigue.

Frequently asked questions

My shoulders and my eyes are both heavy after a day at the screen. Which should I ask for first?
We will look at both before deciding. Within a full-body session we can give more time to the shoulders, the neck and the area around the eyes. Guests who would rather we work through the whole body without narrowing it down usually choose 90 minutes. Please tell us what is bothering you when you book.
Do I need to change clothes? Can I come between meetings?
Sessions are usually given in a gown we provide. If changing is difficult, we will adjust to your needs case by case. No oil and no instruments are used. The latest start for every course is 19:00, so some guests come to us after work.
I am in Tokyo on business. Can I come on the same day?
Yes, when a room is free. We are open every day of the year from 11:00 to 19:00, and 19:00 is the latest start for every course. Please call +81-3-3581-7354 to ask what is open that day. We are on the mezzanine floor of the Main Building of Imperial Hotel Tokyo, one minute from Hibiya station exit A13.
Will shiatsu make me more productive at work?
We cannot tell you that it will. There are three things we can tell you. It is given by hand, over the whole body, usually in a gown we provide. For that hour you are resting. And the person working on you holds the Japanese national licence for Anma Massage Shiatsu. Shiatsu is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician.
Can my company arrange sessions for several people?
Yes. A company booker is welcome to write or call, through the same door as everyone else. Please tell us the date, the time, the number of guests and the course. If that is not yet settled, we will tell you which times are open. Gift vouchers are available as well.

Risks and side effects

After a session, the areas we have worked on may feel heavy or tired. Rarely, a spot where pressure was applied may be sore for a short time, or a small bruise may appear. Most of this settles within a few days; if it continues, or grows stronger, please call us.

There are conditions we cannot work with. Among them are a fever, a fracture, a recent injury, a tendency to bruise or bleed easily and pregnancy. Please tell us when you book.

If you have strong pain, numbness or swelling, please see a physician first. Shiatsu here is practised under the Japanese national licence «あん摩マッサージ指圧師» (Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner). It is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician.

Which traditional Japanese wellness practices can I experience in Tokyo?

Onsen bathing, shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), zen meditation, the tea ceremony and shiatsu are all practised in Japan. Shiatsu was established under that name by Tokujiro Namikoshi in 1925, and it entered the title of Japanese law in 1964. It is performed by holders of the national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, mezzanine of the Main Building, it is carried on by the fourth generation of his family.

I’d like to experience uniquely Japanese wellness in Tokyo. How long does a shiatsu session take?

Shiatsu is a technique that originated in Japan in 1925. No equipment, oils or medication are used — only the fingers and palms. Sessions are given by practitioners holding the national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner, usually in a gown we provide; if changing is difficult, we will adjust to your needs case by case. Choose from 60, 90 or 120 minutes, in a private room on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Shiatsu is performed under Japan’s national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician.
