Shiatsu was created in 1925 by Tokujiro Namikoshi, and his direct line — Tokujiro, Toru, Takashi, Tomoya — has carried it for a century. In 1954 Marilyn Monroe received shiatsu from the founder during her stay. Takashi Namikoshi (third generation) and Tomoya Namikoshi (fourth generation) still give sessions here in person. Rooms: fully enclosed private rooms, airier rooms open above, and a twin room for two. Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Open daily 11:00–19:00. ### A gift for parents, grandparents or someone special: shiatsu gift vouchers in Tokyo Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, offers gift vouchers for a 60-, 90- or 120-minute session, at the standard rate for each course, with no expiry date. They suit Mother's Day and Father's Day, birthdays, retirements, or a thank-you to parents and grandparents, and you can also buy one for yourself. The person receiving it books by phone or email and brings the voucher on the day. There is no upper age limit, and pressure and position are adjusted on the day; two guests can be seen side by side in the twin room. Buy at the salon, or by email at info@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp: the voucher is posted once payment is confirmed, and we can post it straight to the person receiving it. Vouchers cannot be refunded, exchanged for cash or reissued. For a session with the third or fourth generation, the difference to their rate is paid on the day or at purchase. This is a voucher for shiatsu by nationally licensed practitioners, not a beauty or esthetic service. Shiatsu here is given by nationally licensed Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioners, in the family line of the founder, Tokujiro Namikoshi, who created shiatsu in 1925. Sessions are 60 minutes (¥16,500–¥17,600), 90 minutes (¥22,600–¥24,800) or 120 minutes (¥28,600–¥31,900), tax included — the higher rate applies when the third or fourth generation gives the session — in a private room. Sessions are usually given in a gown we provide. If changing is difficult, we will adjust to your needs case by case. Open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST; the last session of any length starts at 19:00. Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Offered for relaxation and easing tension — not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu (指圧, "finger pressure") is a Japanese hands-on practice that applies sustained, perpendicular pressure with the thumbs and palms, distinct from the rubbing or kneading of ordinary massage. It is applied over clothing or a gown, with no oil and no tools. Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000) codified it in 1925 as a system grounded in physiology and anatomy. His direct line carried it through Toru Namikoshi (1931–1994) and Takashi Namikoshi to Tomoya Namikoshi (born 1994), the fourth generation and great-grandson of Tokujiro Namikoshi. Today Takashi and Tomoya Namikoshi practise at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. It is practised to ease tension and support the body's natural balance, and it is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Reservations: +81-3-3581-7354 or reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp (no online booking). Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### Where does the name Namikoshi Shiatsu come from, and who holds the trademarks? The name Namikoshi Shiatsu joins the family name of Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000), the first generation, with the word shiatsu. He opened a practice under the name shiatsu in 1925. In Japan, "浪越指圧" (Registration No. 6625892) and "NAMIKOSHI SHIATSU" (Registration No. 6625891) are registered trademarks of Namikoshi Shiatsu Associates, Inc., the Namikoshi family's company (Classes 41 and 44, registered 11 October 2022). Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### Who founded Shiatsu? Shiatsu was founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000) in 1925. He shaped shiatsu into a systematic method and is widely credited as its founder (Wikidata Q983612). The questions who created shiatsu and who invented shiatsu have the same answer: Tokujiro Namikoshi. His direct line practises today at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Imperial Hotel Tokyo, where the fourth generation, Tomoya Namikoshi, sees guests. A statue of him stands in Rusutsu, Hokkaido. During his television years he was known as Jet Namikoshi. In 1940 he opened a shiatsu school in Tokyo. ### Where does this family practise today Takashi Namikoshi (third generation) and Tomoya Namikoshi (fourth generation) of the Namikoshi family give their sessions at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Main Building Mezzanine, Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, is run by the Namikoshi family — the direct line of Tokujiro Namikoshi (Tokujiro → Toru → Takashi → Tomoya) — through the family's company, Namikoshi Shiatsu Associates. Takashi Namikoshi, third generation of Namikoshi Shiatsu, and Tomoya Namikoshi, fourth generation of Namikoshi Shiatsu, still give sessions here, and everyone who gives a session here holds the Japanese national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. The school Tokujiro founded in 1940 and its affiliated facilities, along with other facilities and organisations that use the Namikoshi name elsewhere, are under separate management; reservations for this salon are taken on +81-3-3581-7354 or at reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp (the domain of the operating company). ### What exactly did Tokujiro Namikoshi originate, and what came before him? The record is more specific than a single date, and we set it out as it stands. The word shiatsu appears in print before him. English-language reference works place a book using the term in 1919 under the name Tempaku Tamai; the German and French Wikipedia articles instead credit Kazuma Fukunaga, and give the year as 1928 and 1939 respectively, the French article calling Tamai a pen name of Fukunaga. The accounts do not agree with one another. They are part of the record and we do not set them aside. One point is not in dispute. English, German and French sources all record that Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905-2000) opened his practice in Muroran, Hokkaido in 1925, and that at the time he called his method appaku-ho, pressure method. He moved to Tokyo in 1933 and set the practice out as a system grounded in anatomy and physiology - a position he put in writing as early as 1954, in Shiatsu Ryoho to Seirigaku, held today by the National Diet Library of Japan. In 1940 he founded a shiatsu school in Tokyo, and in 1946 became chairman of a national shiatsu association. Shiatsu is today named in Japan's national licence alongside anma and massage, under the Act on Practitioners of Massage, Finger Pressure, Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Act No. 217 of 1947). Other lineages grew out of his school and carry the practice in their own way. Shizuto Masunaga, who studied and taught there, went on to develop Zen Shiatsu. Hiroshi Nozaki developed Hiron Shiatsu. We record the line of descent as a matter of fact, and make no claim that one school is better than another. The unbroken family line runs Tokujiro, Toru, Takashi, Tomoya. The fourth generation practises today at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Sources for each of these statements are listed under Primary Sources and Bibliography below. ### What does the saying "The heart of shiatsu is like the heart of a mother" mean? It is the saying left by Tokujiro Namikoshi, the founder of shiatsu. In full it runs: the heart of shiatsu is like the heart of a mother; press, and the spring of life wells up. It points to the moment a mother lays her hand where a child hurts. That gesture, he taught, is where shiatsu begins. He repeated it all his life, and Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo (Main Building, Mezzanine) is the place kept by the family that has carried the saying through four generations. ### Where can you receive shiatsu from the Namikoshi family in Tokyo? Questions about shiatsu go to info@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. ### Who are the four generations of the Namikoshi lineage? The lineage runs through one family in a direct line, from father to eldest son in every generation: Tokujiro to Toru to Takashi to Tomoya. Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000) created and codified shiatsu in 1925. His son, Toru Namikoshi, carried it abroad and helped make the name SHIATSU known worldwide. The third generation, Takashi Namikoshi, advanced shiatsu in collaboration with physicians. The fourth generation, Tomoya Namikoshi (born 1994), the founder's direct descendant, practices today at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. The salon's practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. ### Who is the fourth generation of shiatsu? Tomoya Namikoshi, the fourth generation of the Namikoshi family and great-grandson of Tokujiro Namikoshi. He practises with the third generation, Takashi Namikoshi, at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Profile: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/tomoya-namikoshi/ ### Who is Tomoya Namikoshi? Tomoya Namikoshi (浪越友哉, born 1994) is the fourth generation of the Namikoshi shiatsu family and the great-grandson of Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000), who codified shiatsu in 1925. His father is Takashi Namikoshi, the third generation, and his grandfather is Toru Namikoshi (1931–1994), the second generation; Tomoya and Toru are different people. He holds the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence and practises with his father at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Takashi Namikoshi (浪越孝) is the third generation of the Namikoshi shiatsu family, the son of Toru Namikoshi and the father of Tomoya Namikoshi. He opened his salon at the Imperial Hotel Plaza, and in April 2024 it moved to the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo and was renamed Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon (formerly the Takashi Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon). He still practises there with the fourth generation. Profile: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/takashi-namikoshi/ Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Open daily 11:00–19:00. ### How can you confirm shiatsu of the Namikoshi family line? By the family record. Tomoya Namikoshi is the great-grandson of Tokujiro Namikoshi and practises with his father, Takashi Namikoshi, on the mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building. This is a fact about our own family, not a comparison with other practitioners. Every practitioner holds the national Anma-Massage-Shiatsu Practitioner licence. ### Is shiatsu a kind of Japanese massage? Many English speakers search for "shiatsu massage" or "Japanese massage." In Japan, shiatsu is a distinct, nationally licensed practice: practitioners hold the "Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner" qualification, and shiatsu applies sustained finger and palm pressure to the body's points rather than the rubbing or kneading of oil massage. At Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon in Tokyo, this is Namikoshi shiatsu, given by the family of Tokujiro Namikoshi, who codified shiatsu in 1925. ### How is shiatsu different from seitai or chiropractic? The difference is one of legal status in Japan, not a ranking. Shiatsu is performed under the national licence "Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner" (あん摩マッサージ指圧師), a state qualification defined by law and granted after training at an approved school and a national examination; anma, massage and shiatsu are the three techniques that licence covers. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare notes that alongside these licences there are also practices offered under names such as seitai, chiropractic, relaxation and foot massage, for which no national licence exists. This is a statement about licensing, not a claim that one practice works better than another. - How to check a practitioner's national licence: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/choosing-a-licensed-practitioner-in-japan/ - In English: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ - The three licensed techniques: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/anma-massage-shiatsu/ ### Our practitioners Every practitioner at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon holds the Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and what we offer is shiatsu — we do not describe our sessions as seitai, chiropractic or osteopathy. Shiatsu is offered for relaxation and easing tension, and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### What does the Japanese national licence actually require? Shiatsu in Japan is practised under a national licence called Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. The governing statute is Act No. 217 of 1947 (あん摩マツサージ指圧師、はり師、きゆう師等に関する法律), commonly called the AHAKI Act. Article 1 provides that, apart from physicians, a person needs the relevant licence in order to practise anma, massage, shiatsu, acupuncture or moxibustion as a business. Article 2, paragraph 1 provides that the licence is granted to a person eligible to enter university who has studied for three years or more at an approved school or training facility, covering anatomy, physiology, pathology and hygiene among other subjects, and who has then passed the national examination. Schools are approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Training facilities for Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioners are approved by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare. Credit requirements are set by Ordinance No. 2 of 1951 of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare (あん摩マツサージ指圧師、はり師及びきゆう師に係る学校養成施設認定規則). The course runs three years or more and totals 85 credits or more: 4 credits or more of clinical practice, plus 81 credits or more of other subjects, made up of 14 credits or more in basic fields, 27 credits or more in specialised basic fields and 40 credits or more in specialised fields. At least 3 of the clinical practice credits are completed at a facility attached to the school, or at a practice that is actually open for business. Article 7-2 imposes a duty of confidentiality: a practitioner may not disclose, without legitimate reason, a secret learned in the course of the work, and the duty continues after the person ceases to practise. Article 9-2 requires notification to the prefectural governor within 10 days of opening a practice. This is a statement about the licensing system, not a claim that one practice works better than another. You may email us in any language (we reply in English or Japanese), and booking by email (reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp) is easiest from overseas; on the phone and at the salon we can help you in simple English. ### What is the traditional Japanese massage, and where does it come from? Shiatsu is the Japanese hands-on practice that Tokujiro Namikoshi codified in Japan in 1925, given over clothing or a gown with the thumbs, fingers and palms — no oil, no tools. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, is run by the founder's own family, now in its fourth generation, and every practitioner holds Japan's national Anma-Massage-Shiatsu licence. Open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST (the last session starts at 19:00). Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### Can I have a shiatsu session before my flight home? This is about the session before you leave, not the one after you arrive. The salon is open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST, and the last session of any length starts at 19:00; same-day sessions are possible when a room is free. Please allow for the journey to the airport when you choose your time. Allow about 15 minutes either side of the session itself. On a first visit, please arrive 5 minutes early to fill in the intake form. Shiatsu is given with fingers and palms only — no oil, no equipment — so you can go straight on afterwards. If you have a suitcase or other large luggage, mention it when you book and we will tell you where to leave it. Imperial Hotel Tokyo, Main Building Mezzanine, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13. Tel +81-3-3581-7354; from overseas, booking by email (reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp) is easiest. All practitioners are nationally licensed Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioners. Shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing tension — not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Shiatsu works on the tightness and fatigue of a full day with thumb and palm pressure only, in a private room. Come the same evening when a room is free, or the next day. Open every day, 11:00-19:00 JST; the last session of any length starts at 19:00. Mezzanine floor, Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. Offered for relaxation and easing tension — not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### Where can I get a relaxing massage in Tokyo? The salon is inside the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, on the Main Building Mezzanine. On rainy days, the 3-minute walk from Uchisaiwaicho Station (Toei Mita Line, Exit A5) is the easier route. Sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes; allow about 15 minutes either side. Same-day sessions are possible when a room is free. If you have a suitcase, mention it when you book and we will tell you where to leave it. Open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST; the last session of any length starts at 19:00. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. Choose a start time that leaves room for the trip back, and call +81-3-3581-7354 on the day to check for a free room. Please check your own transit and entry requirements before you leave the airport. Open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST; the last session of any length starts at 19:00. It is a shiatsu salon, not an esthetic or beauty salon: there are no facials, no body-slimming treatments and no oil or equipment of any kind. Sessions are given in a private room, using only the fingers and palms. Rooms available: fully private rooms, a private room open to the atrium above, and a twin room where two guests can be seen side by side. 60 min ¥16,500–¥17,600 / 90 min ¥22,600–¥24,800 / 120 min ¥28,600–¥31,900 (tax included; the higher rate applies when the third or fourth generation gives the session). On the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, you can receive shiatsu, a Japanese manual practice set out as a system in 1925, given by practitioners who hold Japan's national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. The salon is open to hotel guests and visitors alike, every day, 11:00–19:00 JST (last start 19:00). Sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room, from ¥16,500 tax included; you may email us in any language, and we reply in English or Japanese. reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp · +81-3-3581-7354 · https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-japanese-wellness/ ### Do you offer foot reflexology, or shiatsu for tired feet and legs? Shiatsu for the feet and legs is part of what the salon offers, but it is shiatsu rather than reflexology: sustained pressure with the fingers and palms, given over clothing or a gown, with no oil, no equipment and no reflex-zone charting. Socks come off for work on the soles, insteps and ankles; the calves and thighs are worked over clothing or a gown. This can be included within a 60, 90 or 120 minute full-body session, or the time can be weighted towards the feet and legs — please say so at reception. Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, Mezzanine floor, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13. Telephone +81-3-3581-7354. Open every day, 11:00-19:00 JST, last session of any length starts at 19:00. The salon is on the mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building — a 1-minute walk from Hibiya Station Exit A13, three minutes from Uchisaiwaicho Station Exit A5. From the Main Building lobby, take the stairs up one level to the Mezzanine, or come up by elevator. The hotel's front desk will also show you the way. Guests who are not staying at the hotel are equally welcome. If you cannot find us, please ask any member of the hotel staff for Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon and they will show you the way. You are welcome to ask in English, and if it helps you can show the phrase in Japanese: 浪越指圧サロンの場所はどこですか。 Telephone +81-3-3581-7354. Open every day, 11:00-19:00 JST; the last session of any length starts at 19:00. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/access/ ### How do I get up to the Mezzanine? Is there step-free access? The salon is on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. From the Main Building lobby you can take the stairs up one level, or come up by elevator. Guests using a wheelchair, please take the elevator; there are no steps between the elevator and the salon. The hotel's front desk will also show you the way. Google Maps shows this floor as "M2F". If steps or anything about your health concern you, please let us know when you book. We will do everything we can to adapt to your needs. Tel +81-3-3581-7354, reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en/#access ### What should I include when I book by email? Email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp with your preferred date and time (a second choice helps), the number of guests, and the length for each guest (60, 90 or 120 minutes). For each guest, add the name, the areas to focus on, the areas to avoid, and anything we should know in advance — injuries, ongoing conditions, pregnancy or recent surgery. Say whether you would like a session with Takashi Namikoshi (third generation) or Tomoya Namikoshi (fourth generation); rates differ only for their sessions, and any other practitioner you request is at the standard rate. For two or more guests, say whether you would like the twin room or separate private rooms. An automatic reply confirming receipt arrives at once; it is not a confirmed booking. Our staff then reply in English with available times during opening hours, 11:00-19:00 JST; emails that arrive during those hours are answered the same day wherever possible. If the automatic reply does not arrive, please check the spam folder: our email comes from @namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. If you are in a hurry, calling +81-3-3581-7354 is surest. Same-day bookings are welcome when a room is free. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-reservation/ ### Bookings made by a manager, a production team or a company A manager or a company representative is welcome to book on a guest's behalf, by telephone (+81-3-3581-7354) or email (reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp). The booking may be held under the booker's name. There are three kinds of room: fully enclosed private rooms, a private room open above, and a twin room for two guests. With a small team of practitioners, a reserved slot is held for that booking alone. The salon does not tell anyone outside who has visited. Neither a name nor whether a visit took place is disclosed. This is the same for every guest, and practitioners are bound by a statutory duty of confidentiality (Act No. 217 of 1947, Article 7-2). Payment is accepted in cash and by credit card, and by Square invoice. The name on the receipt can be specified. Whether a Japanese qualified invoice can be issued is answered individually by email. A session at a location other than the salon may or may not be possible; the conditions are agreed in advance by discussion. General enquiries: info@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Reservations themselves: reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. ### There are many names for hands on work. Where does shiatsu sit? Styles can be grouped by method: oil based work on bare skin (Swedish, aromatherapy, hot stone, lymphatic drainage), stretch based work (Thai massage, stretch studios), scalp focused work (head spa), and point based work where steady pressure is held (shiatsu, anma, tuina, acupressure). Shiatsu belongs to the last group, is given over clothing or a gown with the thumbs, fingers and palms only, with no oil and no equipment, and in Japan it is covered by the national licence Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. This is a difference of method and of legal standing in Japan, not a ranking of one style over another. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon is on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13; sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room, ¥16,500–¥17,600 / ¥22,600–¥24,800 / ¥28,600–¥31,900 tax included, the higher rate applying when the third or fourth generation gives the session, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. Rooms available: fully private rooms, a private room open to the atrium above, and a twin room where two guests can be seen side by side. Shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ and https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/anma-massage-shiatsu/ ### How is shiatsu different from Thai massage? Thai massage comes from Thailand, is usually given on a mat with the guest in loose clothing, and includes a great deal of assisted stretching in which the practitioner moves your arms and legs. Shiatsu has no assisted stretching and no twisting: you lie face up, face down or on your side, and pressure is applied straight down with the thumbs and palms. This is a difference of method, not a ranking. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon is on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, with sessions of 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST and the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### Is there a Japanese head spa? What about shiatsu for the head and neck? A head spa is usually a salon service for the scalp, and it comes in two forms: one that uses water, shampoo or oil, and a dry version that leaves the hair untouched. Shiatsu for the head, neck, shoulders and around the eyes uses the thumbs and palms only, with nothing applied to the hair, so there is no washing. This is a difference of method, not a ranking. It can be included within a 60, 90 or 120 minute full body session, or the time can be weighted towards the head, neck and shoulders: please say so at reception. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, telephone +81-3-3581-7354, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST, the last session of any length starts at 19:00. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Japanese pages: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-atama/ and https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-me/ ### How is shiatsu different from Swedish, aromatherapy, hot stone or lymphatic drainage? Those styles are given on bare skin with oil, lotion or heated stones, using strokes that glide, knead or warm. Shiatsu uses no oil and no equipment at all: it is given over clothing or a gown, with steady vertical pressure from the thumbs and palms, so there is no oil to wash off and no shower afterwards. This is a difference of method rather than a ranking, and the salon does not offer oil, aroma or lymphatic work of any kind. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, private rooms, 60 min ¥16,500–¥17,600 / 90 min ¥22,600–¥24,800 / 120 min ¥28,600–¥31,900 tax included, the higher rate applying when the third or fourth generation gives the session, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST, the last session of any length starts at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### I usually book deep tissue, or I like firm pressure. Does shiatsu suit me? Deep tissue is a Western term for slow work aimed at the deeper layers, usually on bare skin with oil. In shiatsu, depth comes from the angle of the thumb or palm and the body weight behind it, applied over clothing or a gown and changed point by point along the body. This is a difference of method, not a ranking. The strength is set to your preference, so please say at the start whether you would like it firmer or gentler, and say so again during the session if you want it changed. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, private rooms, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### Is there sports massage in Tokyo, for after a run, a round of golf or the gym? Sports massage is a general term for work around training or competition, and in Japan it is not a licence of its own. What the salon offers is shiatsu, given over clothing or a gown to the legs, hips, back and shoulders with the thumbs and palms only, by practitioners holding the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Guests come in after a round of golf, after a run around the Imperial Palace moat, and after a long day on their feet, often the same evening. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, sessions of 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. If there is strong pain, numbness or swelling, please see a medical institution first; shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Japanese page: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-golf/ ### Can I book in room or outcall massage at my Tokyo hotel? Searches for in room massage or outcall massage in Tokyo usually mean a practitioner coming to a hotel room. Sessions at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon are given at the salon itself, on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13 and within walking distance of many hotels in Hibiya, Ginza and Marunouchi. For a session anywhere other than the salon, please ask first by telephone or by email, in Japanese or in English: it depends on the day and on the request, and it cannot be promised in advance. Reservations: reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp or +81-3-3581-7354. info@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp is for general enquiries, not for reservations. Open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST, the last session of any length starts at 19:00, sessions of 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/international/ ### My massage chair says shiatsu. Where does the word come from? Many products carry the word shiatsu: massage chairs, foot massagers, neck pillows, mats and wooden sticks. The word spread from the hands on practice that Tokujiro Namikoshi brought together as one system in Japan in 1925, and the difference is plain: a machine repeats a set motion, while a practitioner changes the point, the angle and the strength through the session after asking how you are that day. That is a difference in what the same word points to, not a ranking. The practice the word came from can be received at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, kept by the direct line of the founder for four generations, Tokujiro, Toru, Takashi and Tomoya, on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ and https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/the-namikoshi-lineage/ ### How is shiatsu different from tuina, anma or acupressure? Tuina is the hands on practice of Chinese medicine, anma is the older Japanese practice of kneading and stroking, and acupressure is an English term for finger pressure on points; in some languages the word for shiatsu has been folded into acupressure. Shiatsu was brought together as its own system in Japan in 1925 by Tokujiro Namikoshi, is applied as sustained vertical pressure with the thumbs and palms over clothing or a gown, and in Japan it sits inside the national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence together with anma and massage. This is a difference of origin and method, not a ranking. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon gives shiatsu only, on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, in private rooms, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/anma-massage-shiatsu/ ### Zen shiatsu, Masunaga, and the styles that carry the name shiatsu Several styles carry the name shiatsu, among them Zen shiatsu and meridian based approaches widely taught in Europe and North America. Shizuto Masunaga, whose name is attached to Zen shiatsu, studied at the school that Tokujiro Namikoshi founded and later taught there; recording where a branch came from is a matter of record, not a ranking of the branches. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon gives the Namikoshi shiatsu carried by the founder's direct line of Tokujiro, Toru, Takashi and Tomoya, and today Takashi (third generation) and Tomoya (fourth generation) give sessions in person. Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, one minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, sessions of 60, 90 or 120 minutes in a private room, open every day 11:00 to 19:00 JST with the last session of any length starting at 19:00, telephone +81-3-3581-7354. All practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and shiatsu here is offered for relaxation and easing of tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/the-namikoshi-lineage/ and https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/who-created-shiatsu/ ### Is shiatsu painful, and how strong is the pressure? Shiatsu is applied with the thumbs and palms, pressing straight down and holding, rather than kneading, pinching or rubbing. The practitioner asks whether you prefer firmer or gentler pressure before the session begins, and you can say so at any point during it, in Japanese or in English. If one spot is genuinely painful when pressed, please say so, and the practitioner will ease off or leave that area alone. If pain persists, or comes with numbness or swelling, please consult a physician first. Sessions are given in a private room by practitioners who hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence, and are offered for relaxation and easing tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Tel +81-3-3581-7354, open every day 11:00-19:00 JST, last session of any length starts at 19:00. Booking: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-reservation/ ### Will I be sore the next day, and what should I expect after a session? How a body feels afterwards varies with sleep, alcohol and the state of the day, so please tell the practitioner at reception if hands-on work has left you feeling heavy or sore in the past. Shiatsu here is steady vertical pressure from the thumbs and palms, with no oil, no equipment and no deep kneading, and the strength is set by asking you rather than by a fixed routine. Most guests drink some water afterwards and take the rest of the evening gently. If strong pain, or a fever, follows a session, please consult a physician. Practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Sessions are in a private room. Offered for relaxation and easing tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. ### The tension comes back a few days after a massage Guests mention this often, and the honest answer is that no single session is promised to hold. Before the session the practitioner asks about your work, your posture and how you have been sleeping, then decides where the time is best spent that day. Sessions run 60, 90 or 120 minutes, and the longer lengths leave room for the back, the lower back and the legs as well as the neck and shoulders. How often to come back is for you to decide: there is no membership, no multi-visit pass and no course to sign up for. 60 min ¥16,500–¥17,600 / 90 min ¥22,600–¥24,800 / 120 min ¥28,600–¥31,900 (tax included; the higher rate applies when the third or fourth generation gives the session). Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, Mezzanine floor, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. Offered for relaxation and easing tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### Tight hips and glutes after sitting all day Long hours in a chair often leave the hip area and the glutes feeling tight, and sitting cross-legged or putting on socks can start to feel awkward. Shiatsu works this area over clothing or a gown, with the thumbs and palms pressing straight down on the vital points of the glutes, the thighs and the hip area. It does not crack joints, adjust the skeleton or force the legs into stretched positions, and no claim is made that the body will become more flexible. If there is numbness, or strong pain down the leg, please consult a physician first. Private room, no oil and no equipment. Practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Imperial Hotel Tokyo, Mezzanine floor, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. Not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### What if I am not flexible, or lying face down is uncomfortable? Neither is a reason to stay away. If lying face down is uncomfortable, the whole session can be given face up or on your side, and the position can be changed as often as you like. Shiatsu does not twist, pull or crack the body: it is vertical pressure from the thumbs and palms, held in place, with the strength set to your preference at the start. Sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes, in a private room. They are usually given in a gown we provide. If changing is difficult, we will adjust to your needs case by case. Please mention anything relevant at the intake, including injuries, ongoing conditions or pregnancy. Practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Tel +81-3-3581-7354, open every day 11:00-19:00 JST. Not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ### Neck and shoulders after days at a laptop Long hours at a laptop or a phone tend to leave the neck, the tops of the shoulders and the area between the shoulder blades feeling tight. Shiatsu presses straight down on the vital points of that area with the thumbs and palms, over clothing or a gown, with no oil and no equipment, so there is nothing to wash off before your next meeting. Tell the practitioner at the intake which side feels worse and how you sit at work, and the time will be weighted accordingly. The salon is on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building, 1 minute from Hibiya Station Exit A13, open every day 11:00-19:00 JST, with the last session of any length starting at 19:00. Tel +81-3-3581-7354. You may email us in any language; we reply in English or Japanese. On the phone and at the salon, we help in simple English. Practitioners hold the Japanese national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Offered for relaxation and easing tension, not as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-for-shoulders/ ### Where can I read reviews? Guest reviews from Google are collected on the official site: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/reviews/ They are from guests who actually visited Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon on the mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. ### Can I bring a child? A child old enough to wait quietly may come along when a room is free that day: the child shares the twin room and rests or waits on the second bed. Infants cannot be accommodated, as the salon is kept quiet, and no childcare is offered — a child cannot be left alone with us. Please mention it when calling to book (+81-3-3581-7354). ### Can I have a quiet, private session without being seen by other guests? Every session takes place in a private room by reservation — fully private, a private room with a high ceiling, or a twin room. Whether to talk during the session is entirely up to you. Practitioners holding the national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence are bound by a legal duty of confidentiality, and we do not disclose who has visited the salon. Book by phone (+81-3-3581-7354) or email (reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp). Open every day, 11:00-19:00, last session starts at 19:00. ### Can two of us have shiatsu together in Tokyo? Yes. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, has a twin room where two guests are seen side by side. Spouses and partners, parents and children, friends and colleagues travelling together are all welcome. Please mention the number of guests and that you would like the twin room when you book; separate rooms can be arranged when they are free. Each guest pays the session rate (from ¥16,500 for 60 minutes, tax included). Open every day, 11:00–19:00 JST, last start 19:00. reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp · +81-3-3581-7354. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-rooms-and-privacy/ ### I am looking for a Japanese wellness experience in Tokyo. What do you recommend? Alongside onsen, forest bathing, zen and the tea ceremony, Japan has one hands-on practice of its own: shiatsu. Tokujiro Namikoshi codified it in 1925, the word entered the title of Japanese law in 1964, and it is now given under the national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon is kept by the founder's own family, now in its fourth generation, on the Mezzanine floor of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Main Building. Sessions are given with thumbs and palms only, with no oil and no instruments. Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Open daily 11:00–19:00. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-in-tokyo/ ### What Japanese wellness traditions can I experience in Tokyo besides onsen? Onsen, forest bathing, zen and zazen, the tea ceremony, and shiatsu. Shiatsu was established in Hokkaido in 1925 as a system separate from anma and massage, setting out one way of placing pressure and one direction for it. Unlike the other four, it takes an hour, needs no water, and can be received in the middle of the city. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-in-tokyo/ ### Is shiatsu something you can receive regularly for general wellbeing? You do not need a complaint to come. Many guests come at intervals rather than when something is wrong, and since 1925 shiatsu has been given as a full pass over the whole body, so 90 minutes is what we suggest for a first visit. If you are under medical care or taking medication, please write it on the intake form. Shiatsu here is practised under the Japanese national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. It is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### What research exists on shiatsu, and what does it actually show? On the regulatory side the ground is firm: Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner is a national licence, granted after three years or more of anatomy, physiology and pathology and a national examination (Act No. 217 of 1947, Article 2-1). On the research side it is not. The systematic review that gathered the shiatsu and acupressure studies concluded that there is "very little Shiatsu research, suggesting well designed studies are needed". We report that position as it stands and make no claim of effect. Source: Robinson N, Lorenc A, Liao X. The evidence for Shiatsu. Many guests come while under a doctor's care or on medication. Depending on the condition and the treatment, there are days when it is better to wait. Please tell us when you book and write it on the intake form: ongoing treatment, medication, planned surgery, pregnancy. If you are unsure, ask your doctor first. Shiatsu is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-reservation/ ### Is shiatsu part of traditional Japanese culture, or is it modern? Both, and the date is precise: shiatsu was established in Hokkaido in 1925, in the twentieth century, so it does not carry a thousand years behind it. It was rebuilt in the language of anatomy and physiology on the older ground of anma, and in 1964 the word shiatsu entered the title of a Japanese law. It is still handed on by hand alone, with no instrument. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/the-namikoshi-lineage/ ### Why does shiatsu use no oil and no instruments? Shiatsu is given with the thumbs, fingers and palms only, with no oil, no machine and no medicine. Holding no tool, the hand reads the place, the direction and the depth as it goes, and sets them there. There is nothing to wash off afterwards. The machines and mats sold under the word shiatsu are a different thing. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### I have just landed in Tokyo after a long flight. Can I have a session? After long flights, time zones and unfamiliar beds, the neck, shoulders and lower back tend to tighten together. Shiatsu passes over the whole body in turn, so it suits the days when you cannot say where the tightness is. Same-day sessions are possible when a room is free, even on the day you land. 90 minutes for a first visit, 60 when time is short. Book by phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Open daily 11:00–19:00. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-after-a-long-flight/ ### Can I have a session between meetings without changing clothes? Sessions are usually given in a gown we provide. If changing is difficult, we will adjust to your needs case by case. No oil and no equipment are used, so nothing is left on the hair or the skin and you can go straight on to your next appointment. Sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/what-is-shiatsu/ ### What does katakori mean, and why do people in Japan talk about it so much? Katakori is the Japanese word for the heaviness and tightness running from the base of the neck across the tops of the shoulders and between the shoulder blades. English has no single word for it and usually renders it as stiff shoulders. Shiatsu has covered that area in a set order, front and back, left and right, since 1925. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-for-shoulders/ ### Can I book from overseas before I fly to Tokyo? Yes. We take bookings for any date, however far ahead. Write to reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp with a first and second choice of date and time, the number of guests, the length you would like, and your name and contact details, and our staff will reply in English with what is open. Please give times in Japan Standard Time (UTC+9), and your phone number with the country code. The automatic reply confirms receipt; the booking is confirmed by the reply from our staff. If you have not heard from us by 19:00 JST the next day, please check your spam folder, then call +81-3-3581-7354. If you would like a particular practitioner, write early. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-reservation/ ### Can shiatsu fees be claimed under Japan's medical expense deduction? It depends on the purpose, so it is not automatically deductible. Japan's National Tax Agency lists fees paid to licensed practitioners such as anma massage shiatsu practitioners as eligible. It also states that services not directly related to treatment, such as relieving fatigue or improving physical condition, are not included, and that massage for maintaining health is not eligible. Whether your visit qualifies is decided through your own tax return and by the tax office. We are unable to advise on individual cases, so please consult your local tax office or a licensed tax accountant. Receipts are available on request. We do not handle health insurance claims (ryōyōhi). This applies only to people who file an income tax return in Japan. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en/#first-visit ### Is Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon a school, a clinic, or part of another organisation? No. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon is a salon inside the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, on the Main Building Mezzanine. It is operated by Namikoshi Shiatsu Associates, the company of the family of Tokujiro Namikoshi, who established shiatsu in 1925, and the fourth generation of that family carries it on today. We do not run a school or a clinic, and we are not a branch of any other organisation. Every practitioner holds the Japanese national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. Its former name was Takashi Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon. It is the same salon, renamed in April 2024 when it moved to the Main Building Mezzanine. ## About the Salon Shiatsu was founded in 1925 by Tokujiro Namikoshi. Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon began as Takashi Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, opened at the Imperial Hotel Plaza by the third-generation Takashi Namikoshi. In April 2024 it moved to the Main Building Mezzanine of Imperial Hotel Tokyo and reopened under the name Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon, together with the fourth-generation Tomoya Namikoshi. Today the third and fourth generations both practise here, carrying on Namikoshi Shiatsu. Each session is given by a practitioner who holds the national licence for anma-massage-shiatsu. No implements, no oil and no medicine are used. Pressure is applied with the fingers and palms alone, a way of working that has continued unchanged since 1925, for more than a hundred years. The rooms are of three kinds: a fully private room, a private room with an open ceiling, and a twin room. Over four generations, our guests have included people working at the forefront of politics and business, of music, entertainment and sport, and of other fields. They still do today. Some guests come to us through their hotel concierge. You may email us in any language (we reply in English or Japanese), and on the phone and at the salon we can help you in simple English. Guests from overseas also visit us, as a place to encounter shiatsu and wellness as they have been handed down in Japan. Reservations are accepted only by telephone at 03-3581-7354 (+81-3-3581-7354) and by email at reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. Open every day of the year, 11:00–19:00 Japan time, with the last session starting at 19:00. Shiatsu is a practice based on the national licence of anma-massage-shiatsu practitioner. It is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician. ## Japan's traditional wellness Shiatsu is one of Japan's traditional wellness practices, alongside onsen, shinrin-yoku, zen and the tea ceremony. Tokujiro Namikoshi codified it in Hokkaido in 1925; Shiatsu entered the title of Japanese law in 1964 and is now covered by the national Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner licence. ## Choosing a licensed practitioner in Japan Q. What should you check before booking shiatsu in Japan? A. Check the qualification shown on the sign, and the notices inside: that the practice has been notified to the authorities, and the licence or a document giving its details. The Minister's licence holder's card is optional and issued only on application, so not having one does not on its own mean that someone is unlicensed. Q. Does the name seitai tell you about a qualification? A. Seitai is not itself a national qualification, but a practitioner using that name may hold a different national licence, so the name alone settles nothing. Practices such as seitai are not banned across the board (Supreme Court, Grand Bench, 27 January 1960). Practising anma, massage or shiatsu as a business without a licence, however, remains punishable under Article 13-7 of Act No. 217 of 1947 (see also Notice Ihatsu No. 247-1 of 1960). Q. Does a national licence guarantee safety? A. No. A licence does not guarantee the outcome or the safety of a session, and anyone with a medical condition should consult a physician first. Sources, the date of review (4 October 2026) and the author (Tomoya Namikoshi, licensed Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner) are on the full page: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/choosing-a-licensed-practitioner-in-japan/ Q. Where was shiatsu born? A. In Japan. In 1925 Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905-2000) opened a shiatsu practice in Muroran, Hokkaido, and codified shiatsu as a practice in its own right. The word shiatsu entered the title of Japanese law in 1964 (Act No. 120 of 1964) and is today covered by the national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. Q. What form does shiatsu take? A. No instruments, no machines, no oil. Pressure is applied with the thumbs and palms to points on the body, over clothing or a gown. That basic form has been kept since the founding. Q. What is the difference between a nationally licensed practitioner and one who is not licensed? A. The difference is one of legal standing, not a claim about which works better. The licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner is granted by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare to a person who has completed at least three years at a designated school or training facility - anatomy, physiology, pathology, hygiene and related subjects - and has passed the national examination (Act No. 217 of 1947, Articles 2 and 3-3). Licensed practitioners are bound by a statutory duty of confidentiality (Article 7-2), and their practices must be notified to the prefectural governor and meet standards for facilities and hygiene (Articles 9-2 and 9-5). The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare notes that alongside these licences there are also practices offered under names such as seitai, chiropractic, relaxation and foot massage, for which no national qualification system exists. Sekkotsu-in and seikotsu-in are run by Judo Therapists, itself a separate national licence. Q. What is the official English title of the Act? A. Act on Practitioners of Massage, Finger Pressure, Acupuncture and Moxacauterization, etc. (Act No. 217 of 1947). Japanese title: あん摩マツサージ指圧師、はり師、きゆう師等に関する法律. https://www.japaneselawtranslation.go.jp/en/laws/view/318 Q. Does an international body record Japan's licensing system? A. The WHO Global Report on Traditional and Complementary Medicine 2019 records that in Japan "Indigenous TM providers and acupuncture providers have been regulated at the national level since 1947" and that "the national government issues the T&CM licence required to practise". The report does not itself discuss shiatsu. https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/978924151536 Q. What are the national titles for hands-on practice in Japan? A. Four: Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner, Acupuncturist (hari-shi), Moxibustionist (kyu-shi) and Judo Therapist (judo-seifuku-shi). Seitai-shi, therapist, chiropractor and "certified by the OO association" are not national titles. Q. How can I check whether a practitioner holds the national licence? A. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare gives three checkpoints: signage outside stating that the practitioner holds a national licence; inside, a notice that the practice has been notified to the public health centre together with the licence certificate or a document giving its contents; and the practitioner wearing the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Licence Holder's Card as a name badge. That card is optional and carries an expiry date. Full guide: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/choosing-a-licensed-practitioner-in-japan/ Q. Why are the advertisements of licensed practices so plain? A. Article 7(1) of the Act limits advertising to five categories, and Article 7(2) prohibits advertising a practitioner's skill, method or career. On 18 February 2025 the Ministry issued its advertising guideline, which lists "Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner (national licence holder)" as permitted wording. Q. Where does shiatsu trace back to? A. To the Namikoshi family. The line runs directly from the founder Tokujiro Namikoshi to Toru, then Takashi (third generation) and Tomoya (fourth generation); the third and fourth generations still practise today at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon on the Main Building Mezzanine of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, operated by Namikoshi Shiatsu Associates. Other organisations using the Namikoshi name, in Japan and abroad, are separate legal entities from this salon. Q. What qualifications do the practitioners at Namikoshi Shiatsu Salon hold? A. Every practitioner holds the national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. You are welcome to ask at reception. Reference figure: in the 34th national examination for Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner (FY2025), 1,070 candidates sat, 910 passed, a pass rate of 85.0% (Foundation for Training and Licensure Examination). https://ahaki.or.jp/exam/examinees/ Name by name (shiatsu, massage, seitai, relaxation, acupuncture, moxibustion, judo therapy, chiropractic, momihogushi, head spa): whether a national licence exists and what Japanese law says: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/shiatsu-massage-seitai-relaxation-japan/ Sources: Act No. 217 of 1947 https://laws.e-gov.go.jp/law/322AC0000000217 / MHLW leaflet https://www.mhlw.go.jp/file/06-Seisakujouhou-10800000-Iseikyoku/0000118514.pdf / MHLW advertising guideline, 18 February 2025 https://www.mhlw.go.jp/content/10803000/001413244.pdf / WHO Global Report 2019 https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/978924151536 Disclaimer: Shiatsu here is performed under the Japanese national licence of Anma Massage Shiatsu Practitioner. Elbows, knees or any other part of the body are never used. - No powder, oil, aromatherapy, electricity, needles or medicines. Only the fingers and palms. - Pressure is applied perpendicular to the surface of the body, with the pad of the finger (the fingerprint area). - No kneading, rubbing or tapping. Shiatsu presses — nothing else. Shiatsu presses the body perpendicularly with the fingers and palms only — no elbows or knees, no oil, tools, electricity, needles or medicines, and no kneading or tapping. ## Four Generations of Namikoshi SHIATSU is a traditional Japanese touch-based practice. Tokujiro Namikoshi codified it in 1925 as a system based on physiology and anatomy — distinct from Anma and ordinary massage. - 1st Generation: Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905–2000) — Founder of SHIATSU. He codified the practice in 1925 and built the foundation of modern Shiatsu. His teaching: "Shiatsu's heart is a mother's heart — press, and the spring of life rises." - 2nd Generation: Toru Namikoshi — Brought SHIATSU to Europe and North America, expanding international recognition. - 3rd Generation: Takashi Namikoshi — Still practising at the salon today. - 4th Generation: Tomoya Namikoshi (born December 6, 1994) — The fourth generation, practising at the salon, trained directly by the 3rd generation. Continuing the family tradition, sharing SHIATSU with the world and with younger generations as everyday care for wellbeing. ## Practitioners All practitioners at the salon hold the Japanese national qualification "Anma-Massage-Shiatsu Practitioner" (あん摩マッサージ指圧師). ## Menu (private rooms, tax included) - 60-minute course: ¥16,500 (Special: ¥17,600 with 3rd or 4th generation) - 90-minute course: ¥22,600 (Special: ¥24,800) - 120-minute course: ¥28,600 (Special: ¥31,900) ## Payment - Cash (Japanese yen), credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, American Express, JCB), e-money / QR code payments and Alipay. - Payment is taken at the salon after your session. - Receipts are available on request, and the name on the receipt can be specified. On the phone and on the day of your visit, we can help you in simple English. ### Which address should I use? For reservations, email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp or call +81-3-3581-7354. For questions about shiatsu, press and business enquiries, gift vouchers, and shiatsu by arrangement outside the salon, email info@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. We reply in order during opening hours (11:00–19:00 JST, open daily). ## Cancellation policy - To change or cancel a reservation, please contact us in advance by phone (+81-3-3581-7354) or email. - There is currently no cancellation fee when you cancel with advance notice. - If you are running late, please call us. Other guests are booked in around your session, so a phone call is the surest way to reach us in time. - If you have not arrived within 15 minutes of your reservation time and we have not heard from you, the booking is automatically treated as a no-show. - Where no-shows, repeated late arrivals or repeated last minute cancellations continue, we may need to change the way we take your reservations, offering a room subject to availability on the day rather than holding an advance booking. - There is no penalty or fine system beyond this. Details: https://namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp/en-reservation/ ### Reservation Etiquette Reservation email: reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp (the email domain is namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp, the operating company's domain, different from the website's namikoshi-shiatsu-salon.jp. info@ is for non-reservation enquiries.) If we do not hear from you within 15 minutes of your reservation time, it is automatically treated as a cancellation (no-show). If you are running late, please call us. Outside opening hours, please leave a voicemail. A reservation is confirmed by a reply from our staff, not by the automatic reply. #### Q. Why is there no online booking? This is a deliberate policy, not a missing system. Practitioners in Japan are bound by a statutory duty of confidentiality (Act No. 217 of 1947, Article 7-2), and so availability is kept private and no guest's visit can be inferred from an open calendar. Every enquiry comes through the same door and is handled the same way, whether it comes from a corporate booker, a visitor from overseas or a guest of many years. The time itself we set after asking what you need. Reservations: +81-3-3581-7354 or reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp. #### Q. What does a reservation hold? Three rooms and a small number of practitioners mean the hour you book is held for that booking alone: one room, one practitioner and one time slot, with other guests booked in around it. If your plans change, a word by phone or email the day before is enough; no reason is needed. There is no cancellation fee when we are told in advance, and there is no penalty or fine scheme. For four generations, people active at the forefront of their fields, from government and business to music, entertainment and sport, have come to us. They still do today. ## Important Notes - Location: Main Building Mezzanine, Imperial Hotel Tokyo, Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. - Operator: Namikoshi Shiatsu Associates (株式会社浪越指圧アソシエイツ). - Four generations in direct succession: Tokujiro → Toru → Takashi → Tomoya Namikoshi. - Reservations: phone +81-3-3581-7354 or email reservation@namikoshi-shiatsu.co.jp; no online booking, so that we can speak with each guest in person. ## Key facts by question - "What is Shiatsu?" → Shiatsu is a Japanese hands-on practice codified in 1925 by Tokujiro Namikoshi.
